Okay, so it's been a while friends, and I don't expect you all to be eagerly waiting my newest post but here it is anyway! A lot has happened since my last post. I graduated in April:

Then Tyler and I embarked on many travels around the United States with friends and family!

we hit new mexico vegas texas colorado california arizona, and new york! I may be even missing a few states...

And then we moved home! Being back in Hawaii has been very challenging to say the least however, we have been blessed with gorgeous sights, beautiful weather, and wonderful family! We even bough ourselves an early christmas present! Two surfboards-hopefully we will get nice and tan, and of course fit! We do love being home and we are both nervous yet excited to start the new chapter of our lives. GOOD BYE PROVO and to our friends, COME VISIT!

I'm graduating from Brigham Young University Provo with a Bachelors in Fine Arts & Communications this Friday! I couldn't be more happier. Thank you to everyone who helped me get to where I am now. :) Can't Wait.

So I have been working my butt off on my website: alanayates.com! When you go there you won't believe me! haha :) But believe it or not, html and css codes are a ton of work! Thanks to my friends at Marketecture I have been able to get my website up and running. It is indeed a work in progress but nonetheless it has got me a lot of photography gigs thus far! Check it out when you can. I will be posting my latest photoshoots and so forth!

Our New Place!

So last December, our contract at our old apartment ended. Tyler and I really wanted to move into something bigger and cheaper! We found a cute little home just a few blocks west of our other place. It is one bedroom bigger and a whole lot cheaper! With a few upgrades and a lot of paint, it looks completely different! I didn't take too many 'before pics', but here are a ton of 'after' pics!! (If you click on the photos they will enlarge)

It is my last semester here at BYU--bittersweet. You would think that school would be a lot easier now that I have finished all my major classes and just have a few GEs and some other random arts credits left...it's not. Ty laughed and told me that I chose all the "hard-easy" classes to take. He's right! As much as I love floral design I just had an exam, identification of plants test, quiz, and lab. Ceramics. I love ceramics but i seriously find myself in there every saturday throwing on the wheel. I have to show my completed 8 inch cylinder by Thursday. It's hard enough to center the thing! I have a few major presentations and four papers due on Wednesday! AND...mom comes in on Thursday which means CLEAN HOUSE! Anyway i know everyone has their "hell" weeks but this semester is supposed to be easy!!! And to top it off, I'm sick :( That's all. Thanks for listening.

It's my last semester here at BYU so I decided to take advantage and go to Homecoming for the first time! We went with Kathleen and Harris. It was an interesting night---but we had loads of fun!

So these photos are just some of the many photos on my iphone. They are just some things we've been up to lately...

Every saturday, I head to the ceramics lab to work on my assignments. Tyler came with me this time and made a hollow strawberry! So creative :)

It was Kathleen's bday not too long ago so we took her out to eat at Noodles and Company.

We even got her a cool Lisa Frank birthday card. It was full of magical wishes.

For Tyler's bday dinner we went to eat at a restaurant in the riverwoods called La Holla Grove. It was amazing--I highly recommend it!

Last night I met tyler up in SLC with dinner. Then we went to this super good bakery right next to the U. After we went shopping at Park City :)

I got to go home for a few weeks after summer semester! It was amazing :) I got to play with my family and friends. Too bad Ty couldn't come with me because I know he would have loved to come home. Before this trip home it has been a whole year since i last came home. Since our wedding! I got to catch my sister Kamaile and her two boys before I left back to Utah. I already miss everything about Hawaii.

The Empress of Japan

Ok so I am taking a family history class at school and byu allows its students to access paid websites for free! Ancestry.com is one of them. On ancestry.com you can search all kinds of information, one that particularly caught my attention was the immigration collections. I searched Seijiro Seiji on the immigration collections. I only found Yoshimi Seiji, my great-grandmother. Attached was the immigration PASSENGER LIST that showed she immigrated from Nigata to Hawaii. How cool! It even said that she came on the ship "Empress of Japan." However, something didn't look right. The passenger list showed my great Uncle Arnold traveling with her. Something was odd because it said the Arnold's birth place was Aiea Hawaii. I thought how could this be if this document is an immigration passenger list from Nigata. I showed it to my teacher and we came up with a few possibilites and reasons as to why this might be but i was still uneasy. I called grandma durrett, something i should have done in the first place haha! she told me everything. I quickly sent an unprofessional email to my teacher...

Brother Alford-

this is Alana Durrett I am the one who talked to you after class today about my great-grandmother (Yoshimi) who immigrated fromJapan on the empress of Japan. Well I called my grandmother (what i should have done before!)

Ok so i got the STORY.

she told me that they all lived in hawaii but that her grandmother...my great great granmother was sick in nigata so her dad seijiro my great grandfather sent Yoshimi and Arnold- the little boy that was listed on the passenger list back to nigata to take care of her. That list that i printed was the passenger list from that time!

Also my grandmother told me that her spoiled sister which is arnold's sister too Hideko begged her dad if she could go back to Japan and get a japanese education. My grandmother told me that they all went to normal schools in hawaii but that her one sister wanted to go back to japan and live there with her aunt to get a japanese education. Yoshimi had to send 10$ a month to her...thats a lot back then! Then when the japanese bombed pearl harbor, my grandmother them all wanted Hideko to come home to be with the family but Hideko didn't want to...i guess she felt partial to Japan. Finally years later my grandmother remembers going to pearl harbor with her family to greet Hideko back into Hawaii!

if this is confusing ill just tell you in class.

But i just thought that this was so neat...the best part was that she didn't know the name of that ship and when I told her it was the empress of japan she said it made her day and she wrote it down!

so cool, just thought Id share that with you.

Lopaka & Helewī!

lopaka came to visit us for the week! we had so much fun! He even got to see the snow fall...tyler pointed out that every time the durretts come up to visit it gets EXTRA COLD!

he came to school with me and we took him to see uncle lucky! he really wants to come to BYU now!

twice he went fishing with tyler and kahi and caught fish both times! he caught a huge one but refused to touch it haha...just like me. Of course Kahi wouldn't have that...

then kahi invited us to a trunk or treat at his ward...kamahele was the cutest squirt ever!

then on halloween tyler, his roommates, kathleen and I all went to a dance at NOAHS ARK...well i call it noah's ark but i think its just NOAHS. tyler was lopaka's surfboard and i was a hippie this time.

We also went to a haunted house a couple of weeks earlier with a whole bunch of our friends! This was mine and tyler's 3rd one!! yup our very first date was haunted house 3 years ago!! time flies! first we went to CPK and of course i had to get a lava flow!!

& look how cute tyler is!! :)

SLC saturday night= GIRLS NIGHT OUT! my old roommate and a bunch of our girlfriends went to see ingrid michaelson in concert! it was so much fun! it was definitely worth 15.00 dollars!

in the Kona, Hawaii Temple! yay for family-nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters, moms and dads. needless to say it was an amazing summer.
